Introduction to the Modeling Cycle within the Kentucky Academic Standards for Mathematics

Kentucky Department of Education – Mathematics Professional Learning Module

The term model is used in many ways in mathematics classrooms—manipulatives, visual representations, demonstrations, or conceptual models. While all are valuable instructional tools, they differ from mathematical modeling as defined in the Kentucky Academic Standards for Mathematics (KAS).

The Introduction to the Modeling Cycle module supports educators in understanding mathematical modeling as a structured, iterative process for solving real-world problems, as outlined in KAS.

Through this module, educators will:

  • Explore the components of the mathematical modeling cycle
  • Engage in a modeling task from both student and teacher perspectives
  • Identify ways to intentionally embed modeling within high-quality instructional resources

The module includes presentation slides and a facilitator’s guide, available through the Mathematics Professional Learning Modules.

These Mathematics Professional Learning Modules were developed by the Kentucky Department of Education, support educators in understanding and implementing KAS.
