Formative Assessment Lessons (FALs)

Formative Assessment Lessons (FALs) support teachers in using formative assessment to reveal and develop student understanding of key mathematical concepts and applications. These lessons help teachers and students monitor progress toward grade-level standards while strengthening mathematical reasoning and problem-solving.

FALs:

  • Elicit student thinking and surface misconceptions
  • Support productive struggle and sensemaking
  • Align instruction and assessment to move learning forward
  • Promote collaboration between teachers and students

Elementary FALs are grounded in Dylan Wiliam’s Five Key Strategies for Formative Assessment and model effective instructional practices. These lessons were designed by the Kentucky Department of Education and field-tested by Kentucky teachers, ensuring strong alignment to classroom practice and state standards.

Elementary FALs follow the same lesson structure as secondary Formative Assessment Lessons (grades 6–12), also known as classroom challenges, developed through the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service (MARS) Mathematics Assessment Project.
